The adventure for the supporters of Mazarrón CF, seeing their club play in Segunda B for the first time in their 80 years history, finally came to an end in the middle of May. At one stage in April, with 2 wins, a draw and a narrow defeat at Granada that could so easily have been a victory, it looked as if they could possibly avoid the relegation that had been beckoning since early in the year, but in the end, the pressure of having three of the last four matches away from home proved too much and they sank back into the Tercera.

Off the field, the British supporters club, Los Amigos de Mazarrón, went from strength to strength. Support was such that a coach full went to the games at Granada and Baza, and more than seventy people made a weekend of it and went all the way to Marbella. This trip was particularly successful, organized superbly as usual by Steve and Jan Spencer, in conjunction with Kathy at Dragontours on Camposol A. We stayed Friday and Saturday nights in the 4 star Las Pyramides Hotel in Fuengirola and then went to the match at Marbella on Sunday evening, where we were made to feel more than welcome by the home supporters, who were also seeing their team trying to avoid relegation. Imagine the surprise of the visitors when they saw Carl Cort, ex of Newcastle United and Leicester City, lining up against them! However, fortunately he was only a shadow of his former self and made little impact on the game. Mazarrón went down 3-2 and this was the game that made relegation seem more certain. After the match, we made the long drive back, finally reaching Mazarrón in the early hours of the morning.

On the Wednesday evening of the week following this match, the supporters had their end of season dinner and dance at La Siesta, near to the club ground. This event was also a sell-out, with more than 100 attending, joined by several officials from the club, the Captain Santi Silvar and right back Llamas, who deservedly received the supporters player of the year ward.

Back in the Tercera Group 13 (Murcia) next season, the consolation will be that we will be able to go to all the matches, home and away, to support the team. The supporters have many fund raising activities, mainly aimed at raising funds to support the youth teams at the Town Football club. The Mazarrón B team, comprising of under 23 players, many of whom have progressed from youth team ranks, gained promotion at the last match of their season, and will play in a league only one level below the A team next season! A sign of the strength of football in Murcia is the fact that all four top teams from Group 13 won through to the play off finals this year, and as this goes to press, Real Murcia B seem to have the best chance of replacing Mazarrón in Segunda B after a 3-2 away win in the first leg of their tie.
